Canadians were suckered into paying the gasoline tax at the pumps because they were led to believe that all of the “Gas Tax“ money would be used for road construction, maintenance and repair. Instead, it appears that all of the Provinces have or will be signing agreements with the Harper Government that allows every Province to spend the “Gas Tax“ money on projects and for other reasons not related to roads! I was recently in Newfoundland on business and discovered that the Government of Newfoundland is allowing town councils to spend gas tax money on paying for land use planners, zoning appeal and hearing commissioner costs and for building commercial marinas or new town halls valued at $500,000 or more and other projects not related to roads! Those sorts of expenditures of gas tax money have nothing to do with upkeep and construction of the highways! The Governments have enough money to upgrade the highways but are allowing that money to be wasted and squandered by county and town councils which are pushing all sorts of highly questionable “economic development and tourism“projects. The people who use the highways and roads should contact their MP, MLA,or MHA and demand that their Governments spend every cent of the “Gas Tax“money on road and highway construction, safety upgrading, paving, divided highway construction, rumble strips, maintenance and repair and on absolutely nothing else!
